阿里山賓館於1913年11月4日正式開館，當時是為了興建阿里山高山鐵路、運送砍伐的巨木下山，特別建置安排給日本官員、工程師作為居住招待所。賓館以阿里山的檜木用獨特的卡榫方式建造，沒有使用一根鐵釘，是少有的考究歷史建築；除了建築物的歷史背景，賓館庭園咖啡前的百年櫻花樹、300多年五葉松與900多歲的紅檜木工作樹至今仍在賓館園區內參天屹立。
館內有珍藏多年保存不易的記錄照片，如：日治時期的阿里山車站、沼平車站、十字路車站、眠月車站，及歷年已除役的森林鐵路老火車頭，高山森林鐵道伐木紀錄…等照片，更值得一提的是昭和9年(1934年)日人金子常光手繪的第一張「新高山阿里山地圖」。同時賓館也花了整整一年的時間拍攝、蒐羅了阿里山周遭的四季百花照片，除每年必定吸引數萬人的櫻花海，還有山茶花、玉山杜鵑、一葉蘭、木蘭花、射干菖浦、特有雛菊、梨花、李花、紫藤、紫丁香…等，讓旅客從萬紫千紅攝影作品中一次儘攬四季花海的浪漫。
